Though Hughes later recanted this poem, that didn’t make any difference to me when it jolted me back in my college days. (For those with literal minds [sweet mother of mine], please consider the ironic tone.) I read it again this morning, thanks to an email from John Piper, and was just as moved:

Listen, Christ,
You did alright in your day, I reckon-
But that day’s gone now.
They ghosted you up a swell story, too,

But it’s dead now,
The popes and the preachers’ve
Made too much money from it.
They’ve sold you to too many
Kings, generals, robbers, and killers-
