Disclaimer: Please recall that Claire is about to embark upon her first Red Ribbon Week, and is learning at an age-appropriate level, I assume, about drug and alcohol abuse at school.
Claire and Adam overheard today, while watching from our upstairs window as the workmen next door took a smoke break:
Claire: “Adam, did you know that cigarettes are drugs and they can kill you?”
Adam: “So why are those guys doing that down there?”
Claire: (Long pause) “I don’t know.” (Another long pause) “I guess because they want to.”
Adam: “Hmmm…I guess they want to die.”
Claire: “Yeah, I guess so.”
(P.S. I have to admit I don’t get the whole smoking thing any more than my kids do. Don’t get it. Why do people smoke? Except that they tried it a few times, got addicted, and then couldn’t stop? Is there a reason? I don’t get it either, kids.)
